It has no eyes, only one mouth. It listens and imitates the sounds of its environment transforming them into a beatbox-music-composition. The flower, the reproductive organ of a plant and the lips, create an erotic and disturbing connection. The performance tackles into different manifestations of gender found in nature, such as the blossoms of the ginger flower that are both female and male or the sea horses, whose male carries the pregnancy and gives birth.
Wurst creates a funny but disturbing music piece with strategies of slapstick, looping and beatboxing. The ongoing performance project "Beats in front of art" aims to integrate refugee teenagers by the usage of beatbox as a communication tool. The idea behind it is to question the power relations between a parent and an infant by using the figure of the lion tamer. Who is the dominant figure? Who directs whom? Who relinquishes? Who wins? Parting from the spontaneous movement of a plastic bag blown by the wind, I develop a series of choreographed interactions with household waste.
By doing so, I am creating a portrait of the time and context I'm living in, while tackling into environmental issues through form and composition. The work shows the artist performing in her ninth month of pregnancy to a medley of pop songs in a public space.
The performance reclaims the beauty and sexuality of a pregnant woman, opposing the traditional notion that women should hide their bellies and be ashamed of pregnancy. The gazing male passersby are ashamed and confused due to the unusual pregnant body dancing bluntly on the street. The video points to the oversexualized representation of women in music videos and subverts these images by showing a bawdy gestating woman.
Two 1-liter-bottles travel through the Arabic Emirates. They meet spectacular and surreal backdrops and turn into spectators. The megapolis of Dubai gets into focus. The two most important ressources of this arabic region, water and petroleum, are yuxtaposed to the hypermodern construction projects, luxury facilities, desert areas and commercial sites, which have been built with the help of this valuable commodities.
