On the other, the idea of a secular winter holiday that focuses on the spirit of giving to your loved ones is a nice one, if only more people in real life actually lived up to that. The lights and the snow seemed to him like the quintessential Christmas wonderland and decided to commit the magical little town to film to share with the world. Writer Thomas Meehan offered a one-page story idea called Father Christmas he wrote with a man named Barry Healey, but several studios rejected it until Disney finally picked it up two years later.
This movie is notably not a musical, which is odd because Meehan wrote the libretto for several smash hit Broadway musicals including Annie, Hairspray, and The Producers, as well as the screenplay for the latter. And also Spaceballs. His Wikipedia was a ride. Finance problems and weather delays plagued the 8-month film shoot. Only after the snow was dumped in place did snow finally fall… in the form of a freak blizzard. So now they had to spend time cleaning up all the excess snow.
After all of that, One Magic Christmas hit theatres at the end of November , just in time for the Christmas season. At least the residents of Meafield remember the experience fondly. But will I remember it fondly or am I about to find a lump of coal in my stocking?
