The purpose of this study was to examine the dynamics of prostitution in Dar es salaam city specifically in Kinondoni Municipality. The objectives of the study were; to examine the changes in demographic characteristics of the prostitutes and the reasons for the prevalence of prostitution, to trace the dynamics within the clusters and the Behaviour of the prostitutes and to assess the awareness of the risk behaviours.
An investigation was done in three wards of Manzese; Sinza and Kinondoni, where the data were collected through interview, observations and documentary review. A total of 43 individual respondents were successfully interviewed from 18 centers selected from Kinondoni, Manzese and Sinza wards.
The findings show that prostitutions is on increase indicated by rising number of individual prostitutes both males and females. There is also an extension of geographical area from one ward to all other wards in Kinondoni municipality.
The reasons found out for the prevalence of prostitution are basically social- economic grounds such as poverty, unemployment, peer ground companionship, force, loneliness and pleasure.
Every cluster is differentiated from others by the price they give to customer; place of meeting; the sex offering place and the type of sex. The study also established the fact that prostitution itself is a risk behaviour and is associated with other risks like transmission of HIV, STIs, human trafficking, drug abuse and occupational hazards. Again the study established the fact that, severity of risk distribution differs from one cluster to another due to the level of poverty, age of the victim, nature of sex and the degree of freedom to practice safe sex.
