Beverley Cripps, prosecuting told the jury: "Calum called his sister a whore, was making abusive comments and being verbally nasty, saying that the family had to take financial responsibility for her son, Calum junior.
This upset Cara, who was aware that her four-year-old mixed race child was upstairs, and she attempted to persuade her father and brother to leave. He then pushed her back on to the stairs in the very small hallway. When she was down he got on top of her, grabbed her round the throat and held on. He was saying, 'That's for my wife', referring to a family disagreement.
Whitehurst has already admitted grievious bodily harm against Davenport and actual bodily harm against Davenport's mother, Kim Stupple, who tried to stop the attack. Davenport, freed by West Ham in March, denies actual bodily harm and claims his sister became aggressive and he was merely restraining her to stop her assaulting their father. The trial continues.
