We had another great fishing trip to Baja. This time it was just my dad, John Duitsman, myself, and friend Dave Turner. We spent one night in San Quintin on Baja's Pacific coast. Too cold and windy, so next morning on to "L. This was just supposed to be a little test run and we left dad at the hotel. We had 9 yellowtail in the boat by ! Next day, June 13th, we went to the north tip of the big island, La Guarda. It is about 45 miles one way. We caught lots of triggerfish, barracuda, bass, cabrilla, sculpin, and whitefish.
June 14th, we decided to try fishing further south at the small Isla Partida, 28 miles out of L. There we watched Igor Galvan catch one after another on live macks.
By 10 a. We had no live bait, but got a few big ones on blue-and-white iron, and lost a lot of big ones in the rocks, got tired, and settled for bottom fish and 3 nice groupers up to 10 pounds. June 15th, we fished at Isla Partida again, this time with live bait. We had instant hook ups, slow trolling live ones. Igor was out again and we watched him fight and land a pound grouper!
After way too many lost big ones in the rocks, I switched to pound line. The first mack out, same thing again. Something huge took my line straight down and shredded my line again. We did get four in the boat by 10 a. Special thanks to Igor who eagerly shares info and also was there to help surgically remove a treble hook that was deep in Dave's forearm. He had just landed his giant grouper and saw Dave hooked. Dave first had to push the hook all the way through about 1.
