It argues that sexual identities are not fixed but rather fluid and context-dependent, shaped by the geographical spaces that individuals inhabit. By examining the social and legal constructs surrounding prostitution, the work contributes to the understanding of how marginalized sexual practices challenge societal norms and illuminate the complexities of both heterosexual and sexual minority geographies.
This chapter introduces the concept and content of the book to the readers. It describes the aim of the book to be to elaborate the contingency of how we understand prostitution, and argues that it is often taken for granted in debates and scholarship on what prostitution, sex work or sex for sale are, but rarely investigated further. It further describes some of the literature that offers insightful perspectives on this and that in different ways serves as an inspiration for the book.
The chapter then describes the three parts of the book, 'Historically speaking', 'Speaking from experience' and 'Speaking about control', and how the chapters.
Abstract: This paper charts major changes in the locational distribution of female prostitution in the Perth metropolitan area during the twentieth century, and aims to explain why these changes took place. The study confirmed that there is a positive relationship between changes to law enforcement policy and changes to the spatial distribution of the sex industry.
