I started the campaign March 4th , way before the module was actually published. Players were told that they should create a character that was a descendant of a mortal who assisted one of the gods during the Time of Troubles in Forgotten Realms timeline.
They discovered this power early in life and kept it a secret from others. For example, maybe they were climbing a tree, fell out, and hurt themselves. They discovered that they were able to heal the injury by thought and obviously this was abnormal.
I added this ability as a Feat that all playing characters possessed. A list of examples was supplied to the players and can be downloaded here. When Qrow revealed this, I described to the players that Qrow had what looked like a seizure as a ribbon of bright purple-pink energy emerged from his skull like a worm.
As of this point, none of the other players have decided to role-play their characters revealing anything of importance that uncovered their dark secrets. It was abandoned in two years after the Times of Trouble after Vecna was reportedly defeated and trapped within the dread realm of Ravenloft.
They defeated a Copper dragon who had been corrupted by studying cult texts. The dragon was obsessed with secrets. Good and Evil is not as important in this campaign as Law and Chaos. This session was written from my own material. Session 2 : The heroes were magically transported to Waterdeep via a Wish spell cast by the Wizards Three. The black tether is a mysterious link to Becna himself that the patron gods hope their champions can use to exploit Vecna and ultimately defeat him.
