Intersubjective relations are plagued by an intractable combination of narcissism and aggression, in which the pleasure of recognition wars with the anxiety occasioned by difference. Two crucial questions are addressed by this chapter: first, if knowledge of the other is resisted, is there an alternative basis for equitable intersubjective relations? Second, without knowledge, what happens to the other two points of the triad, power and desire?

Taking the dress code fetish party scene as a case study, I propose that attendees at these events band together to create an experience that turns around the pleasure of sameness without identity, and is therefore able to incorporate difference without anxiety.
I present dress code fetish parties as spaces in which participants collude in suspending knowledge of each other in order to enable a different order of intersubjective relations to appear. Since the space of the fetish party disables knowledge production, I begin with a somatic, rather than cognitive, approach to this experience of self-othering. Sartorial Sameness Every rubber enthusiast speaks of the unique sensation of wearing tight latex clothing. Sweat is trapped between rubber and skin, and this liquid layer seems to dissolve the barrier that ordinary clothing provides.
Rubber transmits heat well, so touching another gives an immediate pulse of warmth; though when rubber touches rubber, you cannot actually feel anything of the other person at all. Finally, latex has a distinctive smell, and the odour of a room full of rubber clothing is a fetish in itself. I have helped to organise a regular fetish party in Tokyo for the last six years; in addition, I have more than a decade of experience as a performance artist in various underground club events, including fetish parties.
