Have you ever tried Thalassotherapy? I was recently invited to try it out at the Thermes Marins in St Malo in Brittany, France and I must say it was a wonderful holistic experience and much more impressive than I had imagined. Thalassotherapy uses seawater and products from the sea in a variety of treatments which are aimed at improving your health. Some experts say that thalassotherapy is one of the best natural remedies to mineralise and detoxify the body.
France is famous for its Thalassotherapy and there are between 40 and 50 thalassotherapy centres in the country. Official thalassotherapy centres there must be located no more than metres from the sea, have a coastal climate and only use pure, clean seawater.
The centres must be no more than a 10 km radius of the Thalasso centre to guarantee the purity of the water. Le Grand Hotel des Thermes is a beautiful 5 star hotel located right next door, and I was lucky enough to enjoy a wonderful 3 nights there with 3 full days fof treatments — all involving sea water. The Thermes Marins comprises a 5, sq metre thalassotherapy centre with 6 sea water pools, 60 cabins for marine hydro-therapy,12 massage cabins and 18 spa Cabins.
It is situated right on the sea and the water used for all the treatments is pumped directly from the sea into the thermal spa where it is filtered and heated. It is then used in a variety of different ways. In the various spa pools you can swim or do supervised exercises — and all are filled with heated sea water. In addition to sea water, the Thermes Marin also uses seaweed for some of its therapies.
Local seaweed is collected from the sea and cleaned and ground into a paste. It is then used in various treatments including amazing body wraps, and body and hand massages as well as an ingredient in some of the Les Thermes Marins in-house cosmetics.
